We are holding a reflecting and writing night this Wednesday (and the next) at 5pm.
🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼
The bushfires across our beautiful nation have caused mass devastation.
Respecting and assisting the victims, the displaced and donating to repair the destruction of our natural environment are paramount concerns, but at the same time, we cannot ignore that while our country burns, we are seeing the very real and very heartbreaking effects of climate change.
I am anxious and terrified about what will come if we do not see our government actively work towards decreasing our carbon emissions and building a safer country for us all.
If you also feel this way and would like to take action, I urge you to write to your local Federal Member of Parliament. The community garden is in the federal electorate of Boothby and the local MP for this area is Ms Nicolle Flint of the Liberal Party. You can check which electorate you live in, and which MP you can write to, here: https://electorate.aec.gov.au/
Writing a letter of concern and demanding action is one of many ways that we can make our voices heard by the government. As registered voters, we have the right to ask our MPs to record our thoughts on issues that matter to us, and to keep our opinions in mind the next time they vote on climate related legislation. We also have the right to ask our MPs to raise our concerns with the Federal Ministers in charge of the Environment and Energy/Emissions Reductions Portfolios. Members of Parliament are, after all, our representatives in Canberra. It is our job as concerned citizens to make sure they hear our voices all year round, not just every four years at voting time.
